Women's Basketball Wins Third Consecutive Game To Stay Perfect In Conference

Rocky Mount, NC - The Southern Virginia women's basketball team (7-4, 5-0) secured a significant conference win over N.C. Wesleyan (4-7, 4-1) with a score of 74-67.

The Knights initially trailed 2-5 in the first four minutes but ignited their offense with three consecutive three-pointers from Presley Heggie, Maria Savvun, and Camilla Norton, establishing an 11-5 lead. In the last two minutes of the first quarter, the Knights maintained their sharpshooting prowess from behind the arc, as Savvun and Abigail Snyder hit threes, securing a commanding 19-8 lead entering the second quarter.

Maintaining the momentum, Savvun's third three extended the lead to 14. However, the Bishops responded with a six-point run, narrowing the lead to six. Regina Woodley and Snyder combined for five points, maintaining a double-digit lead. Nevertheless, N.C. Wesleyan scored six consecutive points, reducing the deficit to five at halftime, with the score at 29-24.

During the third quarter, both teams exchanged points, and Heggie's three-pointer in the closing seconds reinstated a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter at 52-42.

The final quarter showcased continued dominance from Savvun, who secured the win by fending off the Bishops with her clutch shooting and successful free throws, resulting in a final score of 74-67.

Maria Savvun achieved a career-high 23 points while contributing five assists. Ruth Kempler played a crucial role, posting season-highs in rebounds with 11, assists with five, and recording four critical blocks.

The Knights remain on the road, this time in Staunton, VA, where they will face Mary Baldwin University on Tuesday, January 9th, in the 13th contest between the teams. The Knights hold a 10-2 advantage, along with a nine-game win streak. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
