Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team secured their first conference win of the season with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Methodist University.
The Knights struck early, with Benjamin Simister finding the back of the net just 2:25 into the game, setting the tone for the match. However, the Monarchs responded quickly, dominating much of the first half with a pair of corner kicks and tying the game 1-1 after a well-placed ball gave them a scoring opportunity.
Methodist continued their offensive push, converting another chance in the 37th minute to take a 2-1 lead. But just a minute later, Southern Virginia responded with a penalty kick goal from Brock Hester to even the score at 2-2. Before the half ended, the Monarchs managed to sneak another goal past the Knights, sending the teams into halftime with Methodist ahead 3-2.
The second half was a physical battle, with both teams contesting every possession. Southern Virginia applied early pressure, eventually capitalizing in the 64th minute when Landon Stock scored off a free kick following a yellow card, tying the game at 3-3.
In the final 25 minutes, the intensity ramped up with exchanges of fouls and cards as both teams searched for a game-winner. A pair of offsides calls halted Methodist's momentum, and with the game still in the balance, Simister intercepted a pass in midfield. He dribbled through defenders and calmly slotted home his second goal of the match in the 83rd minute, giving the Knights a 4-3 lead.
Southern Virginia held on in the final minutes, securing the victory. The Knights now look to build on this win as they host Greensboro College on Wednesday, October 16th, at 6:00 PM, aiming to climb the conference standings.
