Knights Offense Continues to Roll; Climb Men’s Soccer Standings

Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team kept the goals coming to claim their second consecutive win over a USA South opponent. With a one-goal lead entering the second half, the Knights shut the door defensively and got an insurance marker from Evan Catten to grab a 3-1 victory over Greensboro.

Over the first ten minutes, both teams struggled to maintain possession. However, the Knights grabbed control of the game when Jackson Gorringe sent a corner kick into the box, skipping off the head of Landon Stock before Jackson Erb potted home his second goal of the season just inside the right post. The Knights maintained their pressure, resulting in Benjamin Simister finding woodwork on a turning shot and then firing another just wide of the cage a minute later. Simister found another chance in the 26th minute, but this time, sent a header to Shawn Curtis, who patiently dribbled his way toward the penalty mark before rifling a shot into the back of the net. In the final minutes of the half, Greensboro scored one of their own, but Southern Virginia still took a 2-1 advantage into the locker room.

In the second, both teams traded chances, eventually helping each side total double digits in shot attempts. Knights' keeper Dallin Chappell turned away several high-velocity shots from point-blank to keep his team in front. Chappell's brilliance in goal was rewarded when Evan Catten struck home the Knights' third goal after another beautiful centering feed from Benjamin Simister. The two-goal lead would be there to stay, and Head Coach Payden Pemberton's squad picked up another key conference win to stay amongst the leaders in the USA South.

The Knights will look to remain in the win column when they visit William Peace this Saturday, October 19th, at 4:00 PM. For the most up-to-date information and details on the team, visit knightathletics.com and follow @knightmsoccer on Instagram.
