Raleigh, N.C. — The Southern Virginia University field hockey team fell 1-5 against Meredith College after a tough opening quarter but showed impressive resilience in the second half.
Meredith came out firing in the first quarter, launching 15 shots and scoring four goals, including one at the buzzer, putting the Knights in an early 0-4 hole.
Southern Virginia, however, fought back in the third quarter, creating offensive opportunities. The Knights recorded seven shots in the period, and after earning three consecutive penalty corners, Kareena Olson netted her first goal of the season. Morgan Smith kept the pressure on with three shots within one minute, but it was Olson who finally found the back of the net.
Meredith responded with a strong attack, but goalie Paola Nunez stood tall, making three consecutive saves to keep the Knights within reach. Morgan Smith continued her offensive efforts, registering two more shots before the end of the quarter. Despite a determined effort, Southern Virginia couldn't capitalize on further chances, and Meredith added a late goal in the 57th minute to secure the 5-1 win.
Southern Virginia showed heart despite the early setback, creating multiple scoring opportunities and receiving key contributions from Nunez, who recorded 10 saves. Morgan Smith kept the energy up on offense, taking eight shots throughout the game.
The Knights will next face Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday, October 16th, at 7:00 PM before celebrating Senior Day on Saturday, October 19th.
