Buena Vista, VA - After recognizing their five seniors on a beautiful afternoon at Knights Stadium, the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team dominated for ninety minutes, taking down conference foe Pfeiffer 4-0.
The Knights' offense came out firing as Hailey Gadd recorded a shot on goal under a minute after kickoff. The pressure applied created plenty of opportunities from point-blank range and eventually paid off when the Pfeiffer goalkeeper knocked down Courtney Montes inside the box. A penalty kick was awarded, and Maybel Harris stepped up for the one-on-one opportunity. Harris produced some senior magic and buried her third of the season into the right side of the cage for the early lead. The onslaught wouldn't stop there. In the 21st minute, Lauren Fowler sent an excellent through ball that was pounced on by Courtney Montes on the left side. As the keeper came out to challenge, Montes placed a perfect, low shot into the right side of the cage.
Just minutes later, Head Coach Rob Dahl again went to his bench for fresh legs. The new unit got to work immediately, striking on their first attacking opportunity. Karah Thompson found Courtney Pack in the middle of the field who dribbled her around a defender to find herself on a breakaway and sent another shot into the bottom right corner for a 3-0 lead. The goal marks Pack's second goal of the season and Thompson's first career point in her freshman campaign. The Knights carried their big advantage into the halftime break.
Southern Virginia dominated possession in the second half, giving Pfeiffer virtually no opportunities to score. It was a classic Knights' performance, the kind that led them to a conference tournament title one season ago. The seniors played admirably in their final regular season game in Knights Stadium. Each of them nearly converted on scoring chances. Katrina Gardner pitched a shutout in 32 minutes played, while Baileigh Aland led the team with three shots. Ella Thomas played another defensive clinic while Audrey McKeon and Maybel Harris provided the energy upfront.
The most electrifying moment of the evening came on the only goal in the second half. Ella Thomas sent a pass towards Maybel Harris who backheeled a pass, finding Brynnly Julian striding towards the box. Julian made no mistake in depositing the first goal of her career to extend the lead to 4-0. The scoring ended there, but the damage had been done as the Knights coasted to their fifth conference win. Katrina Gardner, Chloë Miller, and Ruth Summer split a clean sheet in the win, and Maybel Harris led the way offensively with a goal and an assist.
The Knights will take a short break from conference play when they face Mary Washington in their next matchup on Wednesday, October 23rd, at 7:00 PM in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
