Southern Virginia Women's Volleyball Drops First Match in October

Greensboro, NC - The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team traveled to central North Carolina to continue their conference schedule, taking on Greensboro College. Despite a first-set victory, the Knights were denied a twelfth straight win as their opponents stormed back to steal the win, 3-1.

In the early going, Southern Virginia took advantage of several Greensboro attacking errors to build a sizable lead. Brookelyn Madland led the attack in the first to continue an excellent sophomore campaign for her. A familiar face, Sydney Bassett, cashed in on several attacks to vault the Knights to an opening set victory, 25-17. The duo continued their dominance into the second set when they built another early lead. However, Greensboro mustered together a big run, which carried them to a set win, knotting the match at one set apiece.

Kills became hard to come by the rest of the way as Greensboro ramped up their defensive intensity. They also took advantage of several Southern Virginia service errors, which plagued the Knights in the match's latter stages. Gracie Fulton did what she could to keep the Knights within striking distance, nearly equaling a career-high in digs by notching 33.

After dropping the third set, the Knights were on the brink of defeat when they trailed late in the fourth set. After a timeout with the score at 23-17, the Knights showed resilience by collecting the next four points, which provoked Greensboro to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, a couple of well-executed attacks would finish the Knights for good, providing the team with just their second loss in conference play.

The loss comes as an unfamiliar feeling to the Knights, who lost their first game in over a month, bringing their eleven-match win streak to an end. Looking ahead, they'll have an opportunity to put the loss behind them by hosting William Peace as part of homecoming weekend at Southern Virginia University. The match will be on Friday, October 25th, at 7:00 PM.
