Buena Vista, VA - In a game that could be considered a forwards dream, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team collected a high-scoring conference win over conference foe Pfeiffer at Knights Stadium. After honoring three members of the squad for senior day, the Knights kept the shots coming and were powered by a three-goal second half to close out a 5-3 victory.
Benjamin Simister started the scoring early when he capitalized on a beautiful, low cross from Zach Bartholomew. Just twenty minutes later, Bartholomew was at it again and received a long pass from Jackson Erb, then lofted it into the box where Evan Catten drove home a loose ball.Â
After not finding the back of the net after a disappointing loss over the weekend, the Knights were firing towards the goal at will. Despite the early deficit, Pfeiffer didn't shrink from the contest, sending nine shots toward the Southern Virginia cage, keeping goalkeeper Dallin Chappell busy on his senior day.
With the Knights ahead 2-0, the second half turned into a rollercoaster of momentum. Southern Virginia continued to ride the offensive wave that carried them in the first half, converting on two more scoring chances to open a four-goal lead. Landon Stock was responsible for the third goal, collecting a magnificent through-ball from Simister and slipping it into an open net by the keeper. Simister's silky-smooth footwork came in handy only seconds later when he deked his way past a defender, striking a shot from twenty yards to extend the lead further.
Despite the lead, the win would not come easy. Pfeiffer showed resilience, scoring three consecutive goals, including two in thirty seconds to pull within one. However, with the pressure building, a Southern Virginia attacker was hauled down in the box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity for Brock Hester. Hester made no mistake in burying his second PK of the season.
Hester's marker would seal a crucial conference win for the Knights, who are now 3-3 in league play.Â
Head Coach Payden Pemberton's group will now shift their focus to their schedule's final regular season match, a road contest against Mary Baldwin. Kickoff is slated for Wednesday, October 30th, at 4:00 PM.
