Southern Virginia Women's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match; Extends Win Streak to Six

Misenheimer, NC - In another eventful weekend of action, the Southern Virginia women's volleyball capped off an undefeated week with wins over two conference foes, Pfeiffer and Meredith. The wins advance the Knights' conference record to 6-1, leaving them sole possession of first place in the USA South.

Match 1

Pfeiffer, the host of the tri-match, posed as the Knights' first obstacle of the weekend. Southern Virginia took early control of the match with an outrageous run of eleven straight points, taking advantage of several attacking errors by their opponents.  The play was more even later on, but it was too little too late, and the Knights took a 1-0 lead.

The second and third sets were more competitive, but the Knights' three leading attackers, Sydney Bassett, Brenna Clyde, and Brookelyn Madland, kept them in front with their lethal attack. Abbie Anderson and Brookelyn Madland combined for three kills in the late stages of the second to vault the Knights into a 2-0 lead. Southern Virginia faced some adversity in the third frame, falling behind 10-7 at one point, but the Knights weathered the storm by scoring 10 of the next 13 points to reclaim the lead, one that they would not relinquish on their way to a sweep of the falcons.

Match 2

Not long after the opening match sweep, the Knights returned to the court with a matchup with the reigning USA South Tournament Champions, Meredith. Like their first match, Southern Virginia began firing early on, separating themselves from their competition in short order en route to a 25-13 victory in set one. Sydney Bassett led the charge offensively with three early kills. Joining in the action was freshman Gabi Green who registered her first career kill to extend the Knights' lead to five points. Green was steady in the rotation through all five sets, adding a service ace and dig to her name.

Meredith returned motivated for the second frame after a lopsided defeat in the first. The Knights held a sizable lead at one point, but Meredith produced an impressive comeback to knot things at one set apiece. The next two sets followed the same pattern, the Knights dominating the third and Meredith battling back to win a closely contested fourth set, leaving both teams for a decisive fifth and final frame.

Meredith looked to flip the script and took an early lead in the deciding set, leading 10-7 at one point. They eventually won the race to match point, but Southern Virginia remarkably scored the next four points to steal a win from their conference rivals. The dramatic, come-from-behind win marks the Knights' sixth consecutive win after another undefeated week. Gracie Fulton led the team defensively with 23 digs and Brookelyn Madland and Sydney Bassett tied for the team lead in kills with 18.

Next on their schedule, the Knights will host Mary Baldwin at Knight Arena on Tuesday, October 8th at 6:00. For the most up-to-date information and details on the team, visit knightathletics.com and follow @knightwvolley on Instagram.
