Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team used a full team effort to complete a season sweep of Mary Baldwin. The Knights used dominant first and third sets to win their seventh consecutive match and remain atop the USA South standings.
Southern Virginia started the first set strong, rattling off eight of the first ten points to grab an early lead. Eventually, Claire Grasteit put the finishing touches on the set with a kill of her own, allowing the Knights to take a 25-8 victory. Mary Baldwin fought back in the second frame, determined to take their first set over the Knights this season. Brookelyn Madland and Sydney Bassett continued to lead the Knights attack, but Mary Baldwin remained within striking distance. They took advantage of several Knight miscues and eventually held a set-point advantage at 27-26. A timeout by Head Coach Debby Baker sparked the Knights as they scored three straight points to secure the set and put their opponents on the brink of a sweep.
In the third, Southern Virginia returned to form and stormed out of the gates. Ruby Blamires placed plenty of sets in the wheelhouse of her leading attackers, and the Knights found themselves with a 16-2 lead. Sydney Bassett poured it on with three straight service aces before allowing her teammates to finish the job. Daisy Oviedo provided a kill in the late stages of the match, and Kaylie Hanna nearly equaled a career-high in kills when she recorded the Knights' final two points of the night.
Gracie Fulton led the team with four aces and thirteen digs. Sydney Bassett equaled her digs and added 11 more kills to her season total. It was a block party at the net as several Knights recorded multiple blocks, led by Summer Hahn and Brenna Clyde. The Knights return to action this Saturday, October 12th, in a tri-match at William Peace with Averett. The first match is scheduled for 11:00 AM.
