Knights Swimming Takes Down Defending Conference Champs

Greensboro, NC - It was an important afternoon for the Southern Virginia University swim team, particularly for the women who defeated a longtime conference rival. In a triple duel meet hosted by Greensboro College, the Knights exited the pool with almost a clean sweep of team victories. The women's team defeated Greensboro and the reigning champions of the Independent South Conference, Piedmont, while the men also beat Greensboro but fell to Piedmont.

Women's Results

In the first event of the day, the 200 medley relay, the competitiveness of the meet became apparent as Piedmont edged Southern Virginia by just half a second. Despite being outtouched in the first event, the Knights were unfazed and would rattle off seven individual victories and win in the final event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay.

Southern Virginia easily took care of business against Greensboro College, but their main triumph was over Piedmont, the two-time defending conference champions. Their margin of victory, 133-127, was slim, but Head Coach Jennifer Moore was pleased with the outcome. "I'm very proud of the way the women's team raced today. Every person's swim contributed to the team's success!"

She also noted that the win makes them hopeful for the conference championships in February, especially since they missed out on several points due to an injury and illness.

Men's Results

On the men's side, the Knights also put up a good fight, defeating Greensboro by a dominant score of 109-17 for their first win of the season. They also finished with several individual event wins.

Ned Hill won their first event in the 50 freestyle, recording a season's best time of 22.84. He almost went two-for-two but was edged by just three-hundredths of a second in the 100 freestyle. Roman Nowell had the Knights' other individual win and added a couple more top-three finishes.

The Knights will next see the pool this weekend at the VMI Aquatic Center in Lexington to compete in the Keydet Invite. The competition will occur on Friday (Nov. 15) and Saturday (Nov. 16).
