Stock’s Early Tally Lifts Southern Virginia Men’s Soccer to Conference Semifinals

Buena Vista, VA - The third-seeded Southern Virginia University men's soccer team hosted their first conference tournament match since entering the USA South, and the Knights did not disappoint. Landon Stock tallied an early goal to lift Southern Virginia to a 2-1 victory over the sixth seed, Mary Baldwin.

After failing to convert on an early corner, the Knights went right back on the attack. In the fifth minute, Benjamin Simister found himself falling out of bounds along the goal line by the right post but, remarkably, was able to chip the ball into the middle of the box, where an unmarked Landon Stock sent a header into the back of the net.

Despite the early deficit, Mary Baldwin was unfazed and pressured the Knights goalkeeper, Dallin Chappell, who stood his ground. In the second half, Southern Virginia's mix of young and experienced defensive backs was stout, forcing Mary Baldwin to settle for difficult, long-range shots.

Quality defense eventually turned into explosive offense as Benjamin Simister dashed through two defenders, striking a shot off the crossbar. Two minutes later, he sent another sizzling shot off the toe of the keeper, who narrowly staved off the attack. The Knights attackers were finally rewarded in the 61st minute when Simister centered a pass to Evan Catten, who made no mistake, striking a low shot just underneath the arm of the keeper.

Catten continues an impressive late-season run of four goals in his last five games, the most recent two of which held up as the game-winner.

Mary Baldwin finally found a way past Dallin Chappell with under fifteen minutes to play to make things interesting, but ultimately, the Knights proved too much as they held for a 2-1 win. The victory vaults Southern Virginia into the USA South semifinals for the first time, setting up a showdown with the second seed in the tournament, Brevard. The match will occur on Wednesday, November 6th, at 4:00 PM in Brevard, North Carolina.
