Southern Virginia University Women’s Soccer Advances to Semifinals with Commanding 2-0 Win Over Meredith

Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team secured a decisive 2-0 victory over the Meredith College Avenging Angels, advancing to the semifinals of the USA South playoffs.

The Knights struck early, with Soana Akinaka capitalizing on a rebound in the 9th minute to put Southern Virginia on the board. Just six minutes later, Matia Murray added another goal, assisted by Ella Thomas, giving the Knights a quick 2-0 lead.

Southern Virginia continued their offensive dominance throughout the first half, outshooting Meredith 16-0 and holding a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Despite 11 more shots, the Knights couldn't extend the lead before halftime, as the resilient Angels' defense held firm.

The second half saw more of the same, with Southern Virginia controlling possession and firing off another 14 shots and five corners. Meredith goalkeeper Khaliah Jones kept the scoreline close with an impressive 12 saves, preventing the Knights from increasing their lead, but Southern Virginia's relentless offensive presence secured the 2-0 win.

This victory showcased the Knights' improved game plan, especially after a narrow 3-2 win over Meredith in the regular season.

Southern Virginia now moves on to the semifinals, where they will face top-seeded Brevard College on the road. The Knights, determined to bring high energy, aim to avenge their earlier 0-2 loss to the reigning USA South Champions and keep their playoff run alive.
