Southern Virginia University Women’s Soccer Advances to USA South Championship with Thrilling Penalty Shootout Victory

Brevard, NC - The Southern Virginia women's soccer team (9-8-4, 6-2-1) delivered a remarkable upset over undefeated #1 seed Brevard College, advancing to their third consecutive USA South Championship after a thrilling 3-1 win in penalty kicks following a scoreless 110 minutes. The Knights now aim to capture their second title in back-to-back years.

The first half saw the Tornadoes dominate possession, outshooting the Knights 8-1 and putting Southern Virginia on the defensive. However, the resilient efforts of Hailey Gadd, Ella Thomas, Nessie Storey, and Maybel Harris—who all played the full 110 minutes—kept Southern Virginia in contention. The second half brought a shift in momentum, with the Knights outshooting Brevard 6-3 as they pushed the game into overtime.

In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Ruth Summer rose to the occasion with two crucial saves. Audrey McKeon, Maybel Harris, and Matia Murray each converted their penalties, sealing the Knights' 3-1 victory and a ticket to the championship.

Southern Virginia now heads to Fayetteville, N.C., to face Methodist University in the USA South Championship on Saturday, November 9th with kick-off starting at 3:30 PM.

This will be the Knights' third consecutive conference championship appearance. After capturing the title last year, they are eager to defend their crown and secure back-to-back championships this season.
