Greensboro, NC - Facing their fourth straight non-conference opponent to start the season, the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team traveled to Greensboro for a matchup with Guilford College. Despite playing even for most of the night, a second quarter surge from their opponents would be the Knights undoing, as they ultimately lost the game, 65-82.
In the first quarter, the Knights used a swarming defense to fend off the Guilford attack, holding them to just ten points in the opening frame. Despite holding a slight lead to begin the second, the momentum shifted towards the home team. Guilford rattled off 28 points in the quarter while Southern Virginia struggled to take care of the ball.
Despite facing a large deficit coming out of the locker room, the Knights relied on their top scorers and played a much better second half. Ruth Kempler continued her torrid start to the season by going 10 of 13 from the field to record 20 points for the first time this season. Abigail Snyder bounced back from a tough shooting night in her last outing to finish with her first double-double of the season.
Snyder finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and dished out four assists to show everyone why she was a first team all-conference selection last season. Aysia Foster was perfect from the field, ending the night with six points while Addison Newman was the third scorer in double digits for the Knights, totaling ten points.
The Knights finished with a better field goal and free throw percentage, but Guilford made the most of the Knights' mistakes, scoring thirty points off turnovers. The spread between the two teams in the second half was just one point, but the result was a 65-82 loss for Southern Virginia as Guilford remains undefeated.
Head Coach Lynette Schroeder's crew now looks toward their first look at USA South competition this season. They'll welcome Methodist to Knight Arena on Friday, November 22nd at 6:00 PM. As the only team to defeat Southern Virginia in league play last season, Methodist will look to play spoiler again, while the Knights are in search of a statement win to begin their conference schedule.
