Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team hosted their first and only tri-match in Knight Arena this season, sweeping Pfeiffer and defeating Meredith in four sets to send the Knights faithful home happy.
Southern Virginia looked comfortable in their opening match, winning the first two sets to put Pfeiffer on the brink of defeat. In the third, three kills from Sydney Bassett, and a service ace from Gracie Fulton helped the Knights jump out to an early 6-0 lead, seizing control of the play. Summer Hahn recorded four blocks and the team collected eight service aces to take care of business in three sets.
The following match featured Pfeiffer against Meredith, allowing the Knights a couple of hours of rest before their final match of the day with Meredith.
Southern Virginia looked for inspiration from their three seniors who were playing in one of their final regular season home matches in Knight Arena. Sydney Bassett, Brenna Clyde, and Jessica Stone all were part of the Knights' back-to-back conference championships teams two seasons ago, but they are looking to add to the story with another deep run this season.
In the opening set of the match, Meredith had the early jump by establishing a 5-2 advantage. The teams battled back and forth during an exhausting set, with Southern Virginia failing to bridge the gap and falling into a 0-1 deficit.
In the opening moments of the second, a similar trend followed. However, after falling behind 9-5, Sydney Bassett led the Knights on a massive run, registering five kills in a flash and helping the Knights gain a 14-9 lead. They eventually won to even the set count, swinging the momentum back in the home crowd's favor.
Brenna Clyde was her typical, consistent self on both sides of the attack. She recorded several crucial blocks and produced strong attacking numbers as well. Late in the third set, she produced two crucial kills and a block to prevent a surging Meredith squad from tying the score. The Knights eventually clinched the set to take a 2-1 advantage and looked to end things in the fourth.
As the fourth and potential final set commenced, Ruby Blamires raked in the assists at a monster rate, ending the day with 49. Toward the end of the set, after Meredith collected a 22-20 lead, Brookelyn Madland converted on an attack to open a huge four-point run for the Knights. Shortly after, Jessica Stone recorded a service ace which put Southern Virginia ahead for good, defeating Meredith in four sets to sweep the day.
The Knights remain in second place in the conference standings, still in pursuit of Salem's top seed. For their next matchup, they will face Greensboro College at home on Wednesday, November 6th, at 6:00 PM.
