Buena Vista, VA - In their final regular season home match in Knight Arena, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team put on a clinic for their home crowd. The Knights won the first two sets before closing out the Pride from Greensboro in the fourth, winning their thirteenth conference match to remain tied for first place in the USA South.
In the first set, neither team would concede more than three points consecutively, creating an exciting opening frame of play. Trailing 20-23, the Knights put together another one of their patented late-set runs, scoring four straight points to create a set point. Greensboro would tie the score, but a block by Summer Hahn and Brenna Clyde, followed by a service ace from Baylee Savage, wrapped things up, 26-24.
Buoyed by an excellent defense from Gracie Fulton and Jessica Stone, Southern Virginia seemed to settle in during the second set, cruising to a 25-19 triumph. The attacking trio of Sydney Bassett, Brenna Clyde, and Brookelyn Madland were in full force, putting the Pride on the brink of defeat.
In the third set, Greensboro battled back and used a late surge to fend off defeat and force a fourth set. The early parts of the fourth also were going their way, putting pressure on the Knights at a pivotal point of the match. After falling behind 10-13, a kill by Sydney Bassett ignited the attack as they scored five of the next six points.
In the final moments, the defense would shine for the Knights. Katelyn Wankier finished off a monster day by combining with Ruby Blamires for two blocks to close out the win. Wankier finished with seven blocks in the evening, tying her career high.
Gracie Fulton led the way with 27 digs, while Ruby Blamires shined with 42 assists to continue a spectacular sophomore season for her. The Knights will travel to Fayetteville on Saturday, November 9th, for their final regular season match. They'll face Methodist, who sits with Southern Virginia at the top of the USA South standings, in a matchup with huge implications on tournament seeding.
