ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The Southern Virginia men's lacrosse team faced a tough start to their season, falling to the Seahawks of St. Mary's College with a score of 18-6.
The Knights found themselves trailing early in the game as the Seahawks surged to a 3-0 lead. Michael Brown managed to put the Knights on the scoreboard, ending the first period 1-3.
However, the second quarter proved challenging for the Knights as the Seahawks outscored them 6-1, with Michael Brown contributing the lone goal for Southern Virginia, leaving the halftime deficit at 2-9.
After halftime, the Knights staged a comeback, narrowing the gap to four points (9-5) with three consecutive goals, including two from Gabe King and one from Tyson Mauri.
Despite their efforts, Southern Virginia struggled to contain the Seahawks, who scored three goals in just one minute, extending their lead. In the fourth quarter, Zak Sullivan netted the Knights' sixth and final goal of the game.
In their season-opening loss, King led the Knights with two goals and an assist, while Jaydon Arnold dominated the face-offs, winning 13 and scooping up a game-best 10 ground balls. Goalkeeper Lightfoot made 18 stops and managed to grab one ground ball.
St. Mary's College maintained control throughout the game, with a significant 64-26 shot advantage and a 43-28 margin in ground balls.
The Knights will return home for their home opener against Roanoke, marking the first matchup between the two teams.
