Southern Virginia Baseball Upended by CNU in Season Debut

Newport News, Va. — In the team's first series of the season, the Southern Virginia University baseball team took on Christopher Newport University on the road. Game one of the series resulted in a dominant 18-3 victory by the Captains, while game two showcased a more tightly contested matchup, with CNU needing a comeback to secure the 9-5 win.

Game One Notes:
  • Marcelino Leonardo Jr. led the team offensively, recording two hits with four attempts at bat, while also tallying an RBI
  • Ryan Ferris also had a solid at-bat percentage, going 2-for-4 at the plate
  • Stockton Hall managed two RBI's sending Ty Martinez home for one earned and one unearned score
 
Game Two Notes
  • The Knights came alive in the fourth inning, with Southern Virginia getting on the board after a walk sent Stockton Hall home for the unearned run
  • After the walk, Zack Geertsen doubled to right center for the triple RBI, advancing Robert Stemp, Benjamin Horsely, and Marcelino Leonardo Jr. home to put the Knights up 4-2
  • Nick Daynes followed up with a crucial single to left field, allowing Geertsen to score, putting his team up by three, 5-2
  • On the mound, the Knights had Carson Bybee, Chase Smith, Rock Giles, and Ethan Harrison pitching. Bybee had a solid outing with four strikeouts, followed by Harrison with two, and Smith and Giles with one apiece

The Knights are back in action on Tuesday, February 20, taking on cross-town rival Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
