Lexington, VA – The Southern Virginia baseball team secured their first victory of the season in a 7-5 game, propelled by an early flurry of runs that proved decisive down the stretch.
Seth Lloyd and Ty Martinez ignited the offense with consecutive singles, setting the stage for Nick Daynes, whose single brought Lloyd home and advanced Martinez to third. Stockton Hall then made a significant impact by blasting a home run over the left field fence, giving the Knights a 4-0 lead.
Despite the Generals clawing back with three runs, capitalizing on some errors to narrow the score to 4-3 by the third inning, Southern Virginia continued to build on their lead.
In the third inning, Nick Daynes capitalized on an error by the second baseman, paving the way for Mitch Smith's double to center field, extending the Knights' lead to 5-3. Hall remained hot, contributing a single through the right side to score Smith and maintain a 6-3 advantage.
Washington and Lee fought back with two runs in the fifth inning, reducing the lead to one. However, Harrison Moore's two shutout innings secured the save for Southern Virginia.
The Knights added an insurance run in the 9th when Martinez reached on a hit by pitch, Hall was intentionally walked, and Marcelino Leonardo Jr singled to first, scoring Martinez.
Zack Geertsen earned the win with an impressive 4 innings, allowing only two runs and three hits. Hall had a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and one walk.
Looking ahead, the Knights aim to build on this momentum as they host their first game of the season on February 24th, Saturday, against Averett University, with the start time set for 12:00 PM.
