Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia women's basketball team clinched a spot in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament Final with a decisive 66-45 victory over Brevard College in the Semifinals.
The game commenced with an intense defensive struggle, as both teams fiercely contested every possession, resulting in a scoreless deadlock for the initial four minutes. Maria Savvun finally broke the impasse with a crucial three-pointer, followed by Foster's basket, propelling the Knights to a 5-0 lead with five minutes left in the quarter. Despite their efforts, offensive challenges persisted for the remainder of the first quarter, culminating in a 12-5 lead for the Knights. Southern Virginia shot 28.6% from the field and 11.1% from beyond the arc during this period.
In the second quarter, the offense began to gain momentum as the Knights capitalized on turnovers and fast breaks, creating more scoring opportunities. Addison Newman emerged as Southern Virginia's top scorer, contributing six points, while Brevard struggled to match their pace.
Brevard continued to struggle with turnovers, committing 13 compared to the Knights' six. As the quarter drew to a close, Savvun connected on another crucial three-pointer, extending the lead to 10 points. With a score of 27-17 in favor of Southern Virginia, the Knights headed into halftime with confidence.
In the third quarter, Newman ignited the Knights' offense by scoring the team's first six points, providing a crucial spark and extending the lead to 18. However, the Tornadoes mounted a late surge, tallying 10 points in the final four minutes of the quarter. Despite their efforts, Southern Virginia maintained a commanding lead, with the quarter ending 47-31 in their favor.
In the final quarter, the Knights kicked off the action with five points, matched by the Tornadoes' own five-point response. However, Southern Virginia maintained their offensive momentum, with Newman's three-pointer pushing her total to 22 points. The Knights capitalized on their opportunities and remained composed, sealing the victory with successful free throws down the stretch.
Newman delivered a career-best performance, tallying 22 points while shooting 2-3 from beyond the arc and 9-14 from the field. Additionally, Foster made significant contributions with two blocks, six rebounds, and eight points.
Looking ahead, the Knights are set to compete for the conference tournament championship against N.C Wesleyan at the Knight Arena on Saturday, with the game scheduled for 3:00 PM (time subject to change).
