Southern Virginia Men’s Volleyball Remains Perfect on the Year; Sweeps Averett and Virginia Wesleyan

Danville, VA - The Southern Virginia men's volleyball team (8-0, 1-0) hit the road to play Averett University and Virginia Wesleyan. With the Cougars in their inaugural season of men's volleyball, the Knights did not hesitate to bring the heat that they are known and loved for having.

Southern Virginia swept Averett 3-0 with a strong presence at the service line. Freshman Quin Shumway tucked four aces under his belt to lead the team in aces against Averett. This match allowed for a lot of personal learning opportunities for each of the players.

Using the momentum from the match against the Cougars, Southern Virginia went on to face Virginia Wesleyan. The Knights and the Marlins were head to head in attempts, but Southern Virginia was able to pull ahead and secure their eighth consecutive sweep against Virginia Wesleyan. With 20 kills against the Marlins, Christian Sheaffer came close to beating his career high of 28.

The Knights showed stellar defense against the Marlins in all three sets, keeping Virginia Wesleyan to one ace in the game and allowing Kyler Evans to have four blocks. It is often said that volleyball is a game of serving and passing, and Southern Virginia showed that to be true in both of their matches today.

Speaking with head coach Tom Peterson after the game, he expressed that the team is eager to continue their season. "It would be nice to be perfect, but we are doing well on individual pieces and need to put them together," he concluded.

The Knights will look to continue their impressive performance as they continue on the road and play in Stevenson, MD on Friday, February 9th at 7 pm.
