Buena Vista, VA – The Southern Virginia Baseball team took on non-conference opponent Hampden-Sydney College at home Tuesday morning in an unfortunate one-sided affair, falling to the Tigers 13-1 at the end of the 7-inning game.
The Knights started the game out strong, keeping the Tigers scoreless through the first 2 innings. Pitcher
Carson Bybee tallied a strikeout in the top of the 1
st and
Chase Smith followed up with his own strikeout in the 2
nd. The Tigers could only muster 1 hit with their first 7 at bats, the Knight defense making quick work of each other batter, including Catcher
Robert Stempin throwing out a would-be base stealer at 2
nd base.
Southern Virginia's only run of the day came in the bottom of the 1
st.
Ty Martinez shot a rocket into right center resulting in a triple, and he was followed up by
Nick Daynes who sends Martinez home with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field. The Knights were in prime position to tack on a couple extra runs with the next 2 batters finding their way on base from a
Mitch Smith walk and a
Stockton Hall single to left center, but ended with 2 men left on base.
By the 3
rd inning, the Tigers found their offensive stride scoring 12 runs in 5 innings, ending the game with 13 hits, 12 RBIs, 2 doubles, and 2 home runs. The Knights ended with 4 hits, 1 RBI, 1 triple, and 1 double.
The Southern Virginia baseball team will begin conference play at Brevard College in a 3-game series this Friday, March 15
th.
