Southern Pines, NC - The Southern Virginia men's golf team traveled to North Carolina to compete in the Premier College Tournaments Spring Break Challenge. The tournament showed tough competition from formidable opponents such as Marymount University, Goucher College, Ohio Wesleyan University, William Peace University, Calvin College, and Arcadia University.
After the initial day of competition, Southern Virginia found themselves in a commendable third place position. However, the team's resilience and skill shone through on the following day, propelling them to a remarkable second place overall.
Leading the charge for Southern Virginia was Brogan Bennett, whose consistent and impressive play saw him tied for fifth place after back-to-back rounds of 75 strokes each. Michael McCaffrey demonstrated remarkable improvement, climbing from 8th place on day one to secure fifth place with a stellar performance, carding a 73 on the second day.
Luke Wilson's steady contributions throughout the tournament earned him a commendable 10th place finish, capped off with a solid round of 76 on day two. Coleman Oettli closely followed in 12th place, demonstrating his skill with rounds of 77 and 78 on consecutive days.
Nick Johnson's performance landed him tied for 21st place, highlighted by an 81 on the second day of competition. Additionally, Jameson Harper represented the team in the Individuals category, finishing 34th with a score of 86 on day two.
Reflecting on the team's performance, coach Blair Garner remarked, "Michael McCaffrey and Brogan Bennett were in contention late and just came up a bit short in the end. They both played solid both days. Calvin is a very solid team and we gave it a good run trying to catch them. I like the direction our team is going and I'm confident our best playing is in front of us."
Looking ahead, the Southern Virginia men's golf team looks ahead at their next challenge against Maryville College as they travel to Rockford, Tennessee on Wednesday, March 20th, and Thursday, March 21st.
