Winchester, VA - The Southern Virginia softball team commenced their season on the road at Shenandoah University, facing setbacks in both games with scores of 5-9 and 1-9.
The Knights ignited the scoreboard in the opening game's first inning, as Dykell Jones delivered a single, followed by a Sophia Badell triple to right, granting them an early lead. However, Shenandoah responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first.
Southern Virginia continued their strong performance in the next inning, with Emmaline DeGroot's single to left field and Chloe Persinger's single through the right side. Jessica Jones then capitalized with a single, scoring the first run, and Persinger added another run following a throwing error, making it 3-1. The momentum continued as Dykell Jones hit another single, expanding the lead to 4-1.
The Knights appeared promising until the bottom of the sixth, when the Hornets scored seven consecutive runs, ultimately securing a 5-9 victory.
In the second game, the Knights struggled to generate offense, managing only three hits and scoring one run, courtesy of a Katie Claytor home run in the first inning.
Chloe Persinger had an impressive day, going 3 for 5 with one walk. Malia Davis pitched 3.2 innings, recording two strikeouts and maintaining a 1.91 ERA.
Looking to rebound, Southern Virginia aims to secure a home victory against Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday, March 5th, with the game scheduled to start at 2:00 PM.
