Southern Virginia Baseball Takes Down Eastern Mennonite 17-7

Harrisonburg, VA - The Southern Virginia University baseball team clinched a commanding 17-7 victory against the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University, elevating their season tally to 2-5.

The action commenced with fervor in the very first inning. Seth Lloyd ignited the team's momentum with a leadoff single. Ty Martinez then advanced Lloyd to second, setting the stage for Stockton Hall, who drove a single through the right side to bring Lloyd home. The Knights' offense was far from done, as Mitch Smith widened the gap with an RBI double to left-center. The relentless assault continued with Zack Geertsen's double to right-center, ushering Smith across the plate. The situation intensified as consecutive walks filled the bases, creating an opportunity that Sinjun Johnson seized by singling to right field, adding two more runs to extend the lead to 5-0. Demonstrating an impressive return to the plate within the same inning, Lloyd lashed a double to right field, enabling Farris and Johnson to score, culminating in a spectacular seven-run inning.

In the second inning, the Knights' momentum continued as Stockton Hall doubled to left center, setting the stage for Marcelino Leonardo Jr., who then blasted a two-run homer to left field, stretching the lead to 9-0.

Eastern Mennonite University found their footing in the third inning, narrowing the gap with a 3-RBI home run. However, Ty Martinez quickly countered in the top of the fifth with a 3-RBI home run of his own, propelling the score to 12-3 in favor of Southern Virginia. The Royals mounted a comeback effort with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Knights' offense was relentless.

In the sixth inning, Leonardo Jr. sparked another rally with a leadoff single, followed by Zack Geertsen drawing a walk. A fielding error allowed Hunley to reach first and Leonardo Jr. to cross the plate. Ryan Farris then lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Geertsen home, and a double from Seth Lloyd allowed Hunley to score, pushing the lead to 15-6.

The Knights put the game out of reach in the seventh inning. Hall and Geertsen hit back-to-back doubles, and a subsequent throwing error on Hunley's at-bat allowed additional runs to score, finalizing the tally at 17-7.

On the mound, Ben Agnew contributed significantly to the victory, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings and securing the win. Offensively, Hall had a standout performance, going 4-for-5 with a walk and an RBI. Lloyd also shone brightly, going 3-for-6 with two RBIs.

The Knights aim to maintain their momentum as they face Averett on Wednesday, March 6th, for the completion of the suspended game from February 4th, followed by another game.
