Southern Virginia Takes Down Salem College With 21 Run Explosion

Winston-Salem N.C. - The Southern Virginia Knights (9-16, 5-4) took on the Salem College Spirits (3-22, 0-7) in a conference doubleheader Wednesday night. The Knights had an exceptional performance at Blixt Field, tallying twenty-one runs. In two games the Knights towered over the Spirits, claiming victory 10-2 and 11-0.

Game one found the Knights setting the tone early, finding their way around the bases twice in the top of the first. Katie Claytor showed her speed after a bunt that turned into an RBI single, bringing Madison Lloyd around the bases. Chloe Persinger reached first on a fielder's choice to record an RBI single. Those two plays became the kindling for a fiery Knight softball offense, leaving the first inning up 2-1.

In the top of the third Southern Virginia pounded a pair of home runs from Claytor and Sophia Badell, continuing with the offensive momentum they started with in the first. Three batters later the inning was over, but not before leaving their mark on the third inning with a lead of 6-1.

The next few innings were quick with both teams facing a few batters each frame. The Knights found themselves in the top of the sixth inning with a five run lead. Emmaline DeGroot hammered a double straight down the left line, allowing two of her teammates to score, and creating an even larger seven run gap for the Knights. That is when Badell stepped to the plate, where she hit a moonshot for her second home run of game one, giving the Knights the 10-1 lead. The Spirits attempted to close the gap, but to no avail. The game ended with a final score of 10-2.

The evening found the Knights in a state of nirvana, as they turned around for game two. Abby Southern recorded her first win of the season. She slang the ball from the circle allowing only four hits in four innings which stymied the Spirits offensive efforts.

Southern Virginia made quick work of the Spirits in game two, scoring in all five innings to tally their eleven runs. The Knights bats were on fire in game two, totalling ten RBIs in five innings led by Claytor who in the fourth inning, recorded three RBIs with her three run homer. Southern Virginia tacked on twelve hits to their ten RBIs led by Madison Lloyd, Malia Davis, and Arianna Hall who each recorded two hits. The game concluded after the fifth inning, with an 11-0 Knights victory.

The Knights will continue their regular season play on April 13 in Raleigh, N.C. with a double header against Meredith College.
