Southern Virginia Softball Takes Both Games In Clash Against Meredith College

Raleigh, N.C. - The Southern Virginia University Knights took on the Meredith College Avenging Angels in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Knights staged a siege on the Avenging Angels, taking both games on their trip south, winning 6-3 and 5-2.

In game one the Knights got down to business early with a run in the first inning, fueled by a Dykell Jones ground out to third that brought Arianna Hall home. The Avenging Angels didn't waste time in their frame of the first scoring two runs, putting the Knights down by one run at 2-1.

The second inning brought more offense from the Knights. After taking her trip around the bases, Hall smoked a triple to right field and gave two of her teammates the same opportunity to cross home. Hall recorded two RBIs. Those two runs put the Knights up by one run, with a score of 3-2. The Knights stymied the Avenging Angels offensive efforts to maintain their lead in the bottom of the second

Southern Virginia preserved the energy from the second and continued their attack on Meredith. Chloe Persinger slapped a single to shortstop that led to a fumble and a score from Jones. Soon after Chloe Nelson hit a rocket to the hot corner that led to another reach on an error. That same play brought Persinger home to make the score 5-2.

Meredith responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. The fourth followed with two empty frames. Katie Claytor recorded her third hit that added to the Knights offensive pressure over the previous innings.

The fifth inning found the Knights up by three runs, then on a wild pitch Sophia Badell crossed home to finalize the Knights win with one last run. The last two innings were silent. Malia Davis added another win to her pitching record. Abby Southern came in and pitched three quality innings and defended Southern Virginia's lead, recording a save for a 6-3 Knights win.

The Avenging Angels returned in game two ready for battle, scoring two in the first frame, leaving the Knights down two runs. The Avenging Angels held the Knights to two scoreless innings until they finally broke through in the top of the third. Jones skied a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Hall home and recording an RBI. Meredith maintained their 2-1 lead for another inning after one more ground out by Persinger.

Déjà vu struck in the top of the sixth when Persinger hit a rocket to center field that transformed into a sacrifice fly. Claytor tagged up, scored, and tied the game while delivering Persinger the RBI. The Knights returned from their 2-0 deficit, tying the game with one inning left.

Madison Lloyd did what she has done all season, she laid down a beautiful bunt down the third base line that resulted in another run. The Knights finally had the lead in the top of the seventh. That lead didn't stop to rest at one run, Jones hit a massive triple up the middle to center field that ended in another score and a second RBI in game two. Claytor followed that with a dominant double that downed in right field allowing Jones to easily score from third. The Knights defense held the Avenging Angels scoreless in the bottom of the seventh and won the second game of the afternoon.

The Knights will continue regular season play against Greensboro on April 16 in Buena Vista, Va. at Harvey Dryden Field.
