Ferrum, Va - The Southern Virginia's baseball team claimed an impressive 11-4 victory over Ferrum College on Tuesday evening, showcasing a potent offensive performance.
Southern Virginia struggled to generate runs early in the game, falling behind 0-2 before finding their offensive rhythm in the fourth inning. The momentum shifted when Stockton Hall led off with a single through the left side, followed by a walk from Nick Daynes, advancing Hall to second base. Mitch Smith then moved both runners up a bag, allowing Hall to score on a fielder's choice by Marcelino Leonardo Jr., putting the Knights on the scoreboard.
Southern Virginia evened the score in the fifth inning when Robert Stempin's leadoff double paved the way for Zack Geertsen to bring him home with a single through the left side.
The Panthers extended their lead in the bottom of the inning, widening the gap by two. However, the Knights quickly responded in the top of the sixth when Robert Stempin, maintaining his hot streak, blasted a home run to left field, bringing home David Hunley and Mitch Smith to snatch the lead 5-4.
Southern Virginia's pitching stifled the Panthers' offense, while the Knights added to their lead with an RBI double from Hunley in the top of the 8th. A five-run surge in the ninth inning sealed the victory. Leonardo Jr. and Hall contributed two RBIs each, with Hunley delivering the final blow with a single to center, bringing the score to 11-4.
Relief pitchers Ben Agnew, Chase Smith, and Harrison Moore delivered crucial scoreless innings, with Chase Smith securing the win and Moore clinching his second save of the season.
David Hunley stood out with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, driving in three runs. Stempin and Hall both added two RBIs, while Geertsen went 3-for-5 on the day.
With this victory, the Knights improve to 7-13 for the season and now set their sights on conference play as they prepare to face Mary Baldwin University in a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday in Grottoes, Virginia, with game times set for 3:00 PM on Friday and 2:00 PM on Saturday.
