Buena Vista, Va - The Southern Virginia women's tennis team secured another trip to the USA South semifinals after dominating their first-round matchup against Meredith College on Tuesday evening. Second-seeded Southern Virginia swept the seventh-seeded Meredith 5-0.
In the tournament, matches are played to decision, meaning once a team reaches five points, the contest concludes, and any unfinished individual matches remain unresolved.
The Knights kicked off with a strong performance in doubles, with Paula Snelson and Jillian Arnold clinching the #1 spot with an 8-2 victory. Remly Fry and Lia Savage secured the #2 Doubles with a flawless 8-0 sweep, while Lydia Delich and Nadia Molanphy triumphed 8-1 in #3 Doubles.
Southern Virginia required just two more wins to seal the victory. They achieved this with dominant performances, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by Snelson in the #1 singles spot and a similar triumph by Savage in the #6 spot, resulting in a comprehensive 5-0 victory for the team.
The four first-round victors will advance to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and the campus of N.C. Wesleyan. There, the Battling Bishops will host both the semifinal and final rounds on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27.
The Knights will face Methodist in the semifinals, a team they previously defeated with a convincing 7-2 win during the regular season.
