Cary, NC - The Southern Virginia baseball team made history as they clinched their first-ever berth in the USA South Baseball Tournament with an exhilarating 5-4 victory in extra innings against the William Peace University Pacers.
Originally postponed earlier in the season, this crucial tiebreaker game saw the Knights emerge victorious, securing the 5th seed in the tournament.
Southern Virginia got off to a quick start with back-to-back singles from Ty Martinez and Zack Geertsen. This set the stage for an RBI groundout from Stockton Hall, putting the Knights ahead 1-0.
Geertsen showcased his versatility by also taking the mound for the Knights. He delivered an impressive performance, pitching six innings while limiting the Pacers' offense to just one run and recording five strikeouts.
Hall continued to be a key contributor for the Knights. After Ryan Farris was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on another single from Geertsen, Hall played a crucial role in driving Farris home with an RBI through the right side of the field.
William Peace managed to level the score in the 8th inning, setting the stage for extra innings with the game tied at 2-2.
In the top of the 10th inning, Southern Virginia seized the momentum with a leadoff walk by Hall. A sacrifice bunt from Nick Daynes set the stage for Mitch Smith and Seth Lloyd to load the bases with a hit by pitch and a walk, respectively. Marcelino Leonardo Jr. reached first base on a catcher's interference, allowing Hall to score. Farris then delivered a clutch single to left center, bringing home Lloyd and Smith to extend the Knights' lead to 5-2.
The Pacers didn't back down, securing two hits to kick off the bottom of the inning. However, Martinez came up with a game-saving play, catching the tying runner at home for the final out, sealing the 5-4 victory for the Knights.
Martinez had an outstanding performance, going 3-for-5 at the plate and making seven putouts in the outfield. Lloyd also made significant contributions, going 3-for-4 with a double.
Looking ahead, the Knights are set to face Greensboro College in the first round of the USA South Playoff Tournament. Southern Virginia holds a 2-1 record against the Pride this season, outscoring them by a margin of 35-22. The game is scheduled for May 2nd, with N.C. Wesleyan hosting the tournament in Rocky Mount, N.C.
