Buena Vista, Va - The Southern Virginia Esports team wrapped up its 2023-2024 season with impressive achievements after joining the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC). Led by Esports Director TJ Snelson, the team demonstrated exceptional performance and camaraderie, marking their most successful season to date.

Snelson reflected on the team's accomplishments, expressing pride in their outstanding performance and commendable sportsmanship. "This was our best performing year yet, enhanced by the respectful and friendly atmosphere fostered by our players. They not only excel as competitors but also embody the values of the LDS culture," remarked Snelson.

Throughout the season, standout performers emerged across various games:

• League of Legends: Ethan Ferguson distinguished himself as the team's high-performing shot caller.
• Overwatch: Eric Heltzer (graduated) and Gabe Degruccio served as key team carries.
• Valorant: Ainsley Doty assumed the role of team captain and in-game motivator.
• Super Smash Bros: Clendon Neilson showcased prowess as a dominant player.
• Halo: Will White emerged as a pivotal team carry.

 
Head Coach Kevin Lamb praised the League of Legends team for their remarkable 16-0 undefeated streak, which unfortunately ended when they faced UVA. Despite a narrow defeat in a closely contested series, the team's resilience and performance against predominantly Division 1 schools earned recognition.

Seniors Matthew McCubbins and Ben Fly delivered standout performances in their final game, with Fly boasting an impressive scoreline of 18-1. The team's collective effort, including stellar performances from Ethan Ferguson, Stephen Roberts, and Joshua Cannon, demonstrated resilience and determination.

The Knight's League of Legends team concluded the season ranked 11th in the Collegiate League of Legends, with UVA securing the third spot. Determined to showcase their capabilities, Southern Virginia issued a challenge to UVA for a rematch, which was eagerly accepted. On April 20th, in a collaborative effort between the athletic and IT departments, an esports event was held in the arena, pitting both teams in a thrilling three-game series. Despite UVA's initial victory, the Knights rallied back to secure a remarkable comeback win in the second and final game, defying the odds against opponents with significantly higher individual rankings.

The event not only highlighted the technical capabilities of the athletic and IT departments in hosting esports events but also underscored the importance of teamwork and collective effort in overcoming individual proficiency. As the season concludes, the Southern Virginia Esports team looks forward to building upon their successes and furthering their competitive prowess in future seasons.
