Buena Vista, Va. - As the postseason unfolds, the Southern Virginia University esports program has put together an impressive year across both the fall and spring seasons, and looks to carry that momentum as they finish their national competition.
The fall season set the tone early, highlighted by a conference championship from Rocket League. Overwatch followed with a strong runner-up finish, while Marvel Rivals secured third place. The program's depth was evident as Valorant, Super Smash Bros., Rocket League, Overwatch, and Marvel Rivals all earned playoff berths.
That success carried into the spring, where League of Legends added another conference championship to the program's resume following last year's NECC National Championship win Once again, multiple teams made postseason appearances, with Valorant, Super Smash Bros., Overwatch, and Marvel Rivals all qualifying for the playoffs.
Those performances propelled several teams into national competition. Overwatch, League of Legends, and Marvel Rivals each advanced to nationals, while Rocket League also earned a bid but was unable to compete due to graduating players.
At nationals, Marvel Rivals battled to a top-eight finish, exiting in the quarterfinals. The League of Legends squad made a deep run as well, advancing to the semifinals before falling to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. The team will now face University of Alaska Anchorage in the third-place match on May 7 at 9:00 p.m.
The Overwatch team continued to shine on the national stage. The Knights opened with a dominant 3–0 victory over University of North Dakota on May 1, before battling Baker College in a tightly contested semifinal match that ended in a 3–2 loss. Now, Southern Virginia turns its focus to the third-place match, where it will take on University of Mount Union in a best-of-five series on May 8 at 7:00 p.m.
Outside of postseason play, the program also saw success in exhibition competition, as the Valorant team hosted University of Mary Washington for a friendly match securing the win.
That success carried into the spring, where League of Legends added another conference championship to the program's resume following last year's NECC National Championship win.
Southern Virginia's esports program continues to build momentum at every level, with continued conference success into national relevance. With multiple teams still competing , the Knights have established themselves as a growing force on the national stage, with opportunities ahead to cap the season with podium finishes.
