FERRUM, VA – The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team came up short in a hard-fought 0-2 loss against Ferrum College on Wednesday evening, as two second-half goals from the Panthers secured their victory.
The first goal of the match came in the 47th minute when Ferrum's Ashlynn Mitcham scored, assisted by Amber Nichole Gillen, to put the Panthers ahead 1-0. Ferrum extended their lead in the 84th minute with Gillen finding the back of the net, assisted by Bri Bitz, to make it 2-0, sealing the game for the Panthers.
Despite the result, Southern Virginia had several offensive opportunities, outshooting Ferrum 13-12, including four shots on goal. The Knights' best chances came in the second half but were thwarted by Ferrum's goalkeeper, who made four saves.
On the defensive end, the Knights displayed strong efforts with goalkeepers Katrina Gardner and Chloë Miller splitting time in goal. Gardner played the first half, recording one save and allowing no goals, while Miller made five saves in the second half but couldn't prevent the two Ferrum goals.
Statistically, the match was closely contested, with Southern Virginia earning three corner kicks to Ferrum's two, and both teams committed four fouls each.
The Knights will look to regroup as they prepare to host their first home game of the season and begin conference play against N.C. Wesleyan University on Saturday, September 21st, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
