Southern Virginia Battles to a 0-0 Draw Against Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, VA – The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team traveled to Eastern Mennonite University for a hard-fought match that ended in a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of intense play.

The match kicked off at a high pace, with both teams racing up and down the field in a flurry of counterattacks during the first 20 minutes. Landon Stock, Benjamin Simister, and Jacob Cornejo each registered shots for the Knights, with Cornejo coming close to scoring in the 25th minute when the EMU goalkeeper tipped his shot just over the bar.

Both teams created similar offensive chances, each earning three corner kicks and launching their own counterattacks. As the first half progressed, the Royals began to gain offensive momentum, taking four of the last five shots in the final 15 minutes. Despite their efforts, the game remained scoreless at halftime, with the Royals holding an 11-5 shot advantage.

Southern Virginia came out strong in the second half, creating several attacking opportunities that led to two early corner kicks. However, as the game wore on, Eastern Mennonite responded with a pair of corners of their own. The second half saw fewer shots as the match became a battle for control in the midfield, with both teams locked in tight duels.

Eastern Mennonite showed strength in open space, but the Knights maintained better possession throughout the match. In the final ten minutes, Southern Virginia continued to press for a breakthrough, but the Royals' defense held firm, and the match concluded in a scoreless tie after a well-fought contest.

The game ended with both teams earning six corner kicks, though the Royals had the upper hand in shots, 17-8.

Southern Virginia wraps up their ODAC slate with this draw and now has a break before heading into conference play. They will face reigning USA South Tournament Champions Brevard on Saturday, September 28th, aiming to secure their first win against them after a 0-0 tie in 2023.
