Strong First Half Propels Knights to 3-2 Victory

BUENA VISTA, VA – The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team secured a thrilling 3-2 win over Meredith College, fueled by a dominant first half that gave them the edge.

Meredith came out aggressively, earning two corner kicks early in the match, but Southern Virginia quickly turned the momentum. The Knights capitalized on their third corner kick of the game when Maybel Harris delivered a perfectly placed ball into the box, allowing Sydney Bastian to finish with a powerful header, giving the Knights an early 1-0 lead.

Just three minutes later, Southern Virginia doubled their advantage. Abby Klusman slid the ball past the oncoming Meredith goalkeeper after a brilliant through pass from Harris, putting the Knights up 2-0.

Meredith responded in the 31st minute, scoring off a rebound to cut the Knights' lead to 2-1. However, Southern Virginia answered once more before halftime, as a double yellow card in the box resulted in a penalty kick. Klusman stepped up and buried the shot, sending the Knights into the break with a 3-1 lead.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle, with the Knights maintaining an edge in midfield control. However, a late miscue in the 84th minute allowed Meredith to pull within one goal, making it 3-2. Despite the pressure, Southern Virginia held on for the win.

The Knights outshot Meredith 11-7 and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Southern Virginia will now embark on a four-game road trip, beginning with a matchup against William Peace on Saturday, October 5th, at 2:00 p.m.
