Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia University women's field hockey team opened their season with a home game against Virginia Wesleyan, resulting in a tough 0-8 loss, followed by a hard-fought 0-3 defeat on the road at Goucher College.
Despite the losses, the Knights' defense showcased tenacity in both matches, with goalie Paola Nunez already recording 21 saves on the season. Strong defensive plays by Ashley Torgeson, Richelle Seawright, and Karenna Olson kept the opposing teams busy in the midfield, while newcomers Ethnie Despain and Azure Dill made their debuts, adding fresh energy to the team.
Against Virginia Wesleyan, the Marlins displayed offensive prowess to control the game, but the Knights showed improvement against Goucher College, ramping up their play in the midfield and keeping the match closer. However, they struggled to find offensive connections, managing only two shots on goal.
Looking ahead, the Knights will travel to Morrisville, New York, to face SUNY Morrisville on September 18th at 4:00 PM.
