Knights Suffer Loss In Opening Week To Builders

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Southern Virginia University Football team faced a challenging setback in their home opener, falling to Apprentice School with a final score of 9-44.

Despite the outcome, the Knights displayed several promising moments, particularly through their aerial attack, offering a glimpse of what's to come this season.

The Knights battled hard throughout the game, with quarterback Isaiah Maxey leading the offense by completing 12 of 17 passes for 94 yards. Tucker McCormick connected with MJ Laws for a 51-yard touchdown, marking the highlight of Southern Virginia's offensive efforts. Laws led the team with 60 receiving yards, showcasing his playmaking ability.

However, the running game faced difficulties against a stout Apprentice defense, which limited the Knights to 64 rushing yards on 35 attempts. Southern Virginia's offensive line struggled to fend off the Builders' pass rush, allowing five sacks that disrupted the Knights' rhythm.

While Southern Virginia fought to gain momentum, penalties proved costly. The Knights were flagged 11 times for 101 yards. These setbacks hindered their ability to sustain drives and capitalize on key opportunities.

Despite the final score, the Knights remain focused on improving their ground attack and overall discipline as they prepare for their next challenge.

Southern Virginia will now travel to Bridgewater College on September 14th for their next game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
