Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team officially opened the home portion of their schedule by hosting a tri-match with a duo of programs in the newly added ODAC for men's volleyball, Averett and Roanoke. The Knights easily dispatched each of their opponents to improve to 5-0.
In their first match against Averett, the Knights sprinted to a dominant victory by scoring the final thirteen points in a 25-2 thrashing. The two brothers, Jayton and Jett Hall combined for seven service aces to leave the Cougars reeling for most of the set.
Southern Virginia displayed its excellent depth during the match, giving several newcomers and others a chance to shine in place of its typical starters. In the second frame, Averett found life and rattled off three of the first four points. However, the Knights regained control on the strength of the stellar play of Kimo Hughey and Brady Dastrup, who elevated for several powerful kills.
Isaac Carrillo also played a pivotal role in a victory that saw the Knights win each set by a double-digit spread. After a pair of service aces from Bryce Stringam, he put the icing on the cake in the third set, clinching the team's fourth consecutive sweep.

After being spectators in the second match of the day, Southern Virginia loaded up their starters for their second match of the day against Roanoke. Reigning national player of the week, Christian Sheaffer was, again, leading the team with 12 kills. Jason Wang showed off on the defensive end, finishing with a match-high of six blocks; he also now leads the team for the season in that category.
After taking the opening set, the Knights were in cruise control for most of the evening. Gehrig Tolman ignited the crowd several times with impressive sneak attacks at the net. He finished with two kills and fed his teammates to the tune of 23 assists. Kyler Evans was incredibly efficient and led the team with a .714 hitting percentage. Ultimately, Christian Sheaffer had the last say as his final kills brought the team to a perfect 5-0 mark.
Looking ahead, the Knights will take the floor against Lancaster Bible on Saturday, February 1st, in Knight Arena at 11:00 AM. For the most up-to-date information and details on the team, visit knightathletics.com and follow @knightmvolleyball on Instagram.
