Southern Virginia Women's Basketball Opens 2025 With Conference Victory

Buena Vista, VA - With fresh legs and their first taste of competition in over three weeks, the Southern Virginia University women's basketball pounced on their conference foe, Greensboro, by a score of 81-35. The victory brings the Knights win total to ten on the season and keeps them undefeated in the USA South.

After giving up the first basket of the afternoon to their opponents, the Knights put together a productive first quarter on both sides of the ball. Six different players scored in the opening frame, showcasing their depth, and owned a lead of 23-5 heading into the second.

Saydee Allred was particularly impressive in the early going, scoring the quarter's final seven points. Before the half, Southern Virginia didn't slow down one bit. While the offense continued on steady, the defense stood out. They continuously hounded the ball and allowed Greensboro four points in the second quarter for a total of nine points in the half.

Unsatisfied with their results in the first twenty minutes, Greensboro returned fire in the third quarter and found confidence in their shooting. They managed to outscore the Knights 18-16 in the quarter thanks to shooting .60% from the floor. Southern Virginia did well in maintaining its advantage and was aided by the first career points of Emma Openshaw. Saydee Allred found Openshaw beyond the arc for a catch and shoot, who made no mistake in recording a significant milestone in her career.

The Knights restored order in the final quarter and managed to build upon their 59-27 lead entering the final ten minutes. In addition to their efficiency from the field, their smothering defense led them to victory. Nine players registered two steals or more to finish with a whopping 23 on the day. Most of those steals turned into points as the Knights dominated in points off turnovers, finishing with 33 compared to Greensboro's 7.

Saydee Allred led the way with 13 points, a career-high, while Abigail Snyder quietly recorded at least ten rebounds or more for the fourth straight game. The victory improved the Knights' record to 10-2 and made this year's squad the second-fastest team in program history to reach double figures in wins since joining the NCAA.

The Knights return to the floor for a road matchup with Pfeiffer on Tuesday, January 7th at 5:00 PM. For the most up-to-date information and details on the team, visit knightathletics.com and follow @knight_wbb on Instagram.
