Southern Virginia University Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Randolph-Macon Behind Peterson’s Brace

Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team stepped out of conference play on Wednesday night and earned an impressive 3-0 victory over the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets.

The Knights controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, firing three early shots before breaking through in the 19th minute. Delin Peterson intercepted a pass from a Yellow Jacket defender, sprinted past the back line, and buried a shot into the top left corner from 10 yards out to give Southern Virginia the lead.

Randolph-Macon responded with a flurry of chances, forcing Beth Manwill into a key save, but the Knights struck again in the 30th minute. Off a well-placed corner from Natalie Blaser, Hailey Gadd rose above the defense and headed the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0 heading into halftime.

At the break, Randolph-Macon held an 11-7 edge in total shots, but Southern Virginia capitalized on its opportunities and led 3-0 in corner kicks.

The Knights wasted little time extending their lead in the second half. In the 64th minute, Peterson showcased her speed once again, outrunning a defender to create space in the box and slotting home her second goal of the night to seal the 3-0 result.

From there, the Knights' defense shut the door, limiting Randolph-Macon's attack over the final 20 minutes. Despite being outshot 21-14, Southern Virginia put 10 shots on frame compared to just six from the Yellow Jackets.

Manwill anchored the defense with six saves to secure the clean sheet.

The Knights look to carry this momentum into conference play as they continue their four-game home stretch, hosting William Peace University on Friday, October 3rd.
