GREENSBORO, N.C. - In their penultimate road game in league play, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team was unable to overcome a sluggish start at Greensboro College and ultimately fell by a score of 3-1.
With big implications for tournament seeding on the line, Greensboro came out with a sense of urgency in the opening minutes and took advantage of their opportunities.
Just under five minutes gone, the Pride had jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Now with a chip on their shoulder, the Knights responded with offensive pressure of their own.
In the 20th minute, a solo effort from Benjamin Simister who cut through two defenders before rifling a shot along the turf, helped Southern Virginia cut the lead in half. It's the second goal of the season for Simister, who missed significant time at the beginning of the year to injury.
The Knights heavily outshot the Pride in the first half, and did so again in the second, but it wasn't enough to level the score.
Greensboro added an insurance marker in the 57th minute as the Pride held on for a 3-1 victory. Along with Simister, Kenyon Grange tallied three shots to lead the Knights attack. Troy Chamberlain, the reigning USA South Rookie of the Week, made one save in goal.
With the result, Greensboro jumps ahead of Southern Virginia in the ultra competitive USA South. All teams have three games remaining in league play.
Looking Ahead
Next on the schedule, the Knights will host an important matchup with defending USA South champion William Peace as part of Southern Virginia University's homecoming weekend. The match is slated for Saturday, October 18th, at 7:00 PM.
