BREVARD, N.C. - Despite being far from home, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team opened homecoming weekend on a high note, defeating two conference opponents en route to an undefeated weekend.
They beat North Carolina Wesleyan in three, quick sets, before overwhelming the hosts, Brevard College, in another sweep.
Game One
As an encore to a sensational 24 kill performance earlier in the week, Aubrey Packer kept the hot hand in leading the Knights attack.
After claiming the opening set, Southern Virginia rattled off the first 12 points of the second, which included four service aces from Gracie Fulton.
The Knights retained momentum the rest of the way and eventually clinched a sweep after a North Carolina Wesleyan attacking error.
Like Fulton, Packer, Summer Hahn, and Lucy Richins recorded multiple aces in the effort. Emma Broadbent led the team by hitting .375, producing eight kills.
Game Two
Against the tri-match hosts, the Knights raced out to a 12-6 lead, spurred on by a good stretch of play from Anne Downs.
A kill from Aubrey Packer gave Southern Virginia the first set and the team didn't slow down from there. The Knights defense came to play again, collecting 10 blocks compared to 0 for the Tornados. Ryann Vail played a big part of that, recording three solo blocks and three assists.
In the end, Southern Virginia was able to knock off Brevard in three sets, putting them back in the win column with two important wins against conference opponents.
Looking Ahead
Bigger games are ahead for the Knights as they'll return to Knight Arena on Wednesday, October 22nd, to host Salem College at 6:00 PM. It's the second matchup this season between the two finalists in last year's USA South Tournament. Salem won the first game in four sets.
