Buena Vista, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team put up a determined effort but ultimately fell 0-1 to the Tornadoes of Brevard College on Saturday afternoon. With the result, the Knights secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming USA South Conference Tournament.
Southern Virginia controlled the match early, outshooting Brevard 11-2 in the first half and holding a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Despite multiple quality chances, the Tornado goalkeeper recorded seven saves to keep the Knights scoreless heading into halftime.
Brevard broke through just seconds into the second half, capitalizing on a quick counterattack to take the 1-0 lead.
The Knights pressed relentlessly for an equalizer, generating 10 of their 27 total shots in the final 20 minutes of play. However, the Tornadoes defense held strong to preserve the narrow victory.
Southern Virginia finished the match with a dominant 27-8 edge in shots and a 10-0 margin in corner kicks. Senior Courtney Montes led the offensive effort, tallying five shots on goal.
With the loss, Brevard clinched its second consecutive USA South regular season title. The Knights will look to bounce back on the road in their regular-season finale at Mary Baldwin on Wednesday, October 29, before returning home to host the first round of the USA South Conference Tournament.
