BUENA VISTA, Va. - After suffering their first conference loss of the season on Saturday, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team responded in a big way against Guilford College, earning a 1-0 victory.
Both goalkeepers were busy in the first half and tallied multiple saves. Troy Chamberlain of Southern Virginia recorded three to open a superb effort throughout the late afternoon.
Ultimately, both teams posted zero's on the scoresheet by the end of the first frame to set up a tight finish.
In the second, both teams used the bench to their advantage, opting for fresh legs. Several cards were dished out in a physical bout, which eventually set up a free kick for Southern Virginia in the 87th minute.
With no hesitation, Brock Hester bended a shot past the Guilford wall and off the left post before finding the back of the net, breaking a scoreless tie.
Hester's first of the season would eventually clinch a victory for the Knights in their final non-conference game of the season. Troy Chamberlain, another crucial piece to the win, totaled five saves for his second clean sheet of the season.
