Lexington, VA — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team traveled to face undefeated Washington and Lee University on Saturday, falling 76–63 despite a strong second-half effort.
The Generals jumped ahead early and never surrendered the lead, building a 20–9 advantage before the Knights began to settle in. Buckets from Tillman Johnson and Hyrum McConkie helped close the gap to six, but turnovers proved costly. Washington and Lee capitalized with 16 first-half points off turnovers and added 12 second-chance points, while the Knights were unable to record any of their own on the offensive glass.
Southern Virginia entered halftime trailing 42–34 after McConkie and DJ Green carried the scoring load late in the period.
The Knights came out inspired in the second half. A tip-in from Ashton Davis trimmed the deficit to six, and McConkie's second three-pointer brought the Knights within four. However, the offense began to stall, and the Generals regained momentum, heating up from beyond the arc in the final minutes to secure the 76–63 result.
Despite the loss, Hyrum McConkie delivered a career night, scoring a career-high 19 points, adding two blocks, and tying his career high with eight rebounds, all while shooting an impressive 8–10 from the field and 2–3 from deep.
Freshman Ashton Davis provided a spark off the bench, posting 14 points in just 12 minutes, the second-highest total on the team.
The key difference proved to be second-chance opportunities, as Washington and Lee collected 17 offensive rebounds, enough to keep the Knights from completing their comeback.
Southern Virginia now looks to bounce back as they continue their road trip at Warren Wilson College on Tuesday, December 2nd at 7:00 PM.
