ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. - As the holiday season nears a close, the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team was back in action for the St. Pete Beach Classic on the coast of Florida.
For the front end of their back-to-back set, the Knights faced off with Washington University in St. Louis, currently ranked 18th in Division lll on D3hoops.com most recent poll.
No stranger to big match ups, Southern Virginia played a solid opening quarter and took a 17-15 lead into the second. Maria Savvun hit a couple of threes early on and was followed by another from Lily Delarosa.
The Bears played better in the second quarter to take the lead, but Savvun drained another from beyond the arc as time ran out to cut the deficit to just one, 39-38.
In the second half, Anna Kimball looked comfortable in her home state and kept the Knights afloat with nine points in the third quarter.
In the final frame, a major milestone was met when Abigail Snyder canned a shot from three to eclipse 1,000 points for her career, the ninth in program history to do so and just the third in the last 15 years.
The milestone comes during a career season for Snyder, who's averaging just a hair under 20 points per game and having a player of the year like season.
Despite the big news, the Knights were unable to keep pace with the Bears as WashU would take the contest, 83-66. Anna Kimball led the Knights in scoring with a season high of 19 points while collecting seven boards. Snyder recorded 16 points.
Looking Ahead
Southern Virginia will complete their trip down south when they match up with Wellesley College tomorrow, December 30th at 11:00 AM. It'll be the first-ever match up between the two squads.
