Knights Defeat Wellesley as Southern Virginia Women’s Basketball Splits Games In Florida

ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. - After a hard-fought contest on Monday that saw the Knights fall to one of the best teams in the country, the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team returned to the win column with a complete effort over Wellesley College.

Aysia Foster started the scoring in the first minute after a steal from Abigail Snyder turned into a fast break layup.

The sequence was a sign of things to come in a first quarter that was dominated by the Knights defensively.

After finding themselves in an early double-digit deficit, Wellesley produced a positive result in the second quarter and trailed by just four, 26-22, heading into the locker room.

In the third, the Knights held Wellesley scoreless for over five minutes to stretch their lead to as much as 17. The frontcourt duo of Foster and Anna Kimball were dominant, securing 10 of Southern Virginia's first 12 points in the quarter.

Maria Savvun was quietly producing another effective offensive outing, finishing in double-digit scoring for the second straight game. Samantha Smith also scored well, totaling 11 points by the final buzzer.

Ultimately, the Knights were leaving the Florida coast with a 62-49 win over Wellesley College to split their back-to-back set at the St. Pete Beach Classic.

Fresh off her 1,000 point milestone, Abigail Snyder became the star of the show again, finishing with 22 points and recording five steals to lead the defensive effort.
