Southern Virginia Track & Field Readies For 2025-2026 Campaign

BUENA VISTA, Va. - On the eve of a new season, the Southern Virginia University men's and women's track and field teams are in search of another historic campaign.

Head Coach Kyle Chandler's teams are coming off another season filled with championships and hope to replicate that success. They also look to make even more noise on a national level after qualifying two athletes for the same NCAA meet in 2025 for the first time in program history.

The Knights will kick off the indoor season this weekend at two separate meets, Liberty's Indoor Kickoff in Lynchburg and the Colonel Bev Read Opener hosted by VMI on Friday and Saturday in their state-of-the-art facilities.

After the holiday break, the team will attend a few more meets between Liberty and VMI, as well as Roanoke College on two occasions. Their final regular season meet will be the Rockingham Collegiate Classic, hosted by Bridgewater on February 20-21.

The USA South Indoor Championship will take place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on the JDL Fast Track. Events are slated for Friday, February 27th, starting at 9:00 AM.

Both the men and women's teams are searching for a third consecutive indoor team title in the USA South. It would also be each teams' fifth overall indoor championship after claiming titles in the Dlll Atlantic Indoor conference during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Notable returners on the men's side are Spike Adams, McCormick Johnson, and Joseph Hughes, each of whom are reigning individual champions for their respective events in the USA South. Parker Arnold, a former program record holder in the pole vault, will provide important depth in the field events.

Zeke Newman, who battled through injuries most of the spring, is also back and looks to put the region on notice as a key up-and-comer for the Knights.

For the women, they return two athletes who have previously qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Bayleigh Redd-Armstrong, who's coming off an All-Region cross country season, and Marin Simons, a newly minted All-American in the high jump. They'll look to lead the women to new heights.

Surraiya Mahmud-Newman is a returning All-State performer in the throws and jumps. Her versatility will be of great use for the Knights team success.

The NCAA Division lll Indoor Track and Field championship is scheduled for March 13-14 in Birmingham, Alabama at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
