Top Regional Mark Highlights Southern Virginia Track & Field’s Stint at Liberty Open

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Ahead of the imminent winter storm, the Southern Virginia University men's and women's track and field teams squeezed in a competition at the Liberty Open, producing several top marks in the South Region.

Men's Results

McCormick Johnson impressed again in the pole vault, giving the Knights one of their two top ten finishes in the ultra-competitive meet. He cleared 4.30m (14' 1.25") on his first attempt.

The lone program record on the men's side belonged to a newcomer, AJ Word. In the triple jump, Word flew for 13.20m (43' 3.75") on his third and final attempt to establish the new record in his first meet sporting the Knight logo.

Freshman Taylor Weiland impressed in his two distance events, establishing new personal bests in the mile at 4:31.51, as well as the 3K, crossing the line in 8:59.45. Fellow Rookie Sawyer Apple was able to improve on his previous best in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 9.08.

Women's Results

Nine top ten finishes and one school record highlighted a quality day for the women's team. The field athletes had another strong day as Mikki Prows (1.56m / 5 '1.25") and Marin Simons (1.56m / 5 '1.25") finished 5th and 7th in the high jump respectively.

There were also two athletes, Hazel Allen and Surraiya Mahmud-Newman, who threw for personal bests in the weight throw. Allen posted another career best in the shot put at 9.88m (32' 5").
