Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia women's basketball team continued its dominant season, improving to 21-2 overall and a perfect 14-0 in conference play, extending its win streak to 19 games with a hard-fought 56-45 victory over Methodist University.
In a defensive battle, the Knights took control early, grabbing the lead within the first 30 seconds and never trailing. Aysia Foster set the tone with the team's first five points before Alyssa Weiland and Abigail Snyder extended the lead to six.
Southern Virginia closed out the first quarter strong, as Ruth Kempler and Hailey Paige knocked down free throws to push the lead into double digits heading into the second quarter. However, Methodist clawed back, eventually tying the game at 29-29 going into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Knights' offense came alive. Maria Savvun, Weiland, and Foster fueled a scoring surge, and Savvun capped off an 11-0 run with a three-pointer, giving Southern Virginia a 40-29 lead. Weiland and Savvun continued to pace the offense, helping the Knights close out the third quarter with momentum.
The Monarchs refused to go away, rallying in the fourth quarter to tie the game once again at 43-43. But the Knights responded with an 8-0 run, as Foster, Snyder, Kempler, and Weiland all delivered clutch baskets. Snyder then sealed the victory with a three-pointer, extending the lead to 11 points with just 1:42 remaining.
Weiland led all scorers with 15 points and nine rebounds, just shy of a double-double. Snyder and Foster each contributed 11 points, with Snyder securing a double-double with 11 rebounds.
With the #1 seed in the USA South Conference Tournament already clinched, Southern Virginia now looks ahead to its final road game of the regular season against Greensboro College on Tuesday, February 18th, at 7:30 PM.
